Candy allowed the men on the ranch to convince him to allow Carlson to shoot his dog. This killing is considered a "mercy" killing. Perform a mini web-quest and find out what a mercy killing is and how it applied to animals and humans.

Mercy killing is an incurable and painful disease, typically by the administration of large doses of painkilling drugs. With reference to Candy and his dog, Carlson decides it is best if they shoot the dog in the back of its head. So the dog doesn’t feel any more pain. Animal euthanasia is one of the ways for animals to feel a little or no pain when committing mercy killing. Most people may call it “putting to sleep”. Most animals are put down by injections called “pentobarbital or sodium thiopental”. How in the book all the guys try to convince Candy and he finally gives up, so he finally puts the dog in a better place (Page 46, Steinbeck). For humans it is very different. Someone can mercy kill them if they think it will be the best. Mercy killing them can be for their best if the person asks. For example, if someone is suffering from a disease and there is no way to get rid of it, then they can decide whether they want to take a pill if they want. Although, it doesn’t seemed like the right thing, I think it should only be used for when it is needed.
